Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Pharmacy organized a One day State Level Seminar on “Green Chemistry: A Real Time Analysis. on 07th January 2017. ”This thought provoking topic was selected for the seminar to give insight about the recent techniques and applications of Green Chemistry. The Chief Guest for the seminar was Dr. V. G. Gaikar, Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University (BATU) Lonere and Guest of Honor was Dr. C.D. Upasani, Dean (Coordinator), Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Savitribai Phule Pune University. The seminar was inaugurated in the presence of Col. S. K. Joshi, Campus Director, Dr. D. Y. Patil Pratishthan, Akurdi, Pune. Dr. N. S. Vyawahare, Principal, Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Pharmacy marked the beginning of seminar with his intellectual words followed by Mr. M. T. Mohite, Co-ordinator of the seminar who highlighted the objectives of the seminar. The Guest of Honor, Dr. C. D. Upasani took to stage to give key note on the topic.
Dr. V. G. Gaikar commenced his session and highlighted on the importance of Green Chemistry on organic synthesis. He emphasized that Green Chemistry is a new way of looking at organic synthesis and design of drug molecules, offering important environmental and economic advantages over traditional synthetic processes. Also he explained about the various synthetic methods that needs be designed in such a way that the starting materials are consumed to the maximum extent in the final product and the reaction should not generate any toxic by-products.
Later on Dr. K. S. Jain, Principal, Alard College of Pharmacy, Pune emphasized on techniques in Green Chemistry like microwave synthesis, ultrasonic synthesis and catalytic process etc. Also he discussed applications of Microwave assisted eco-friendly organic synthesis and use of Sonochemistry which has many applications due to its high energy and the ability to disperse reagent in small particles and accelerate reactions. Dr. Rakesh Somani, Professor and Head, Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, VES College of Pharmacy, Chembur, Mumbai spoke about Applications of Green Chemistry: A case study. He explained how chemical products should be designed to affect their desired function while minimizing their toxicity with the help of various examples, one of them was “Transformation of aromatic and aliphatic alcohols in the equivalent carboxylic acids and ketones.”
Then Mrs. Sheetal P. Tambe, Research Scientist, Lupin Pharmaceuticals, Pune addressed the gathering on applicability of Green Chemistry in Pharmaceutical Process. She suggested use of various eco-friendly, non-hazardous, reproducible and efficient solvents and catalysts in synthesis of drug molecules and formulation to serve the purpose of Green Chemistry. The next speaker for the day was Dr. Asha Thomas, Associate Professor, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Dr. D. Y. Patil Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research Pimpri, Pune who talked on Greening of Pharmaceuticals: Solvent and Analysis. She highlighted how the Green solvents are derived from renewable resources and different naturally occurring sources and the use of these solvents in the industry for chemical processes and subsequently in the waste- solvent management.
The technical sessions ended with the lecture by Mr. Suraj Bhosale, Assistant Manager, Analytical Development and Research Centre, Evonik India Ltd, Mumbai. He drew attention of the audience on the various Industrial perspectives of Green Chemistry. He discussed how Green Chemistry is integrated into the process of Pharmaceutical Discovery and Development. At the end, valedictory function was conducted wherein few delegates expressed their views about the seminar. On this occasion, Mr. Abhishek Swami from Second Year B. Pharm. proposed the vote of thanks. Ph. D. Awardee Dr. (Mrs.) P. M. Chaudhari was felicitated at the hands of Campus Director, Col. S. K. Joshi. Overall the seminar was a grand success.
